Crowley grads
complete Navy basic
Navy Seaman Mason R. Wood, son of David A. Wood of Crowley, and Navy Seaman Recruit Tyler L. Oldham, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, Wood and Oldham completed a variety of training that included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations.” This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly “Navy” flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.
Wood and Oldham are 2008 graduates of Crowley High School.

Burleson residents turn out for National Night Out
About 300 people gathered at four different sites in Burleson on Oct. 7 to participate in the annual National Night Out celebration.
Neighbors had cookouts in the Mistletoe Addition as well as at The Arbors apartment complex. One National Night Out group had a bounce house. Community Resource Officer Mike Owen and Police Chief Tom Cowan of the Burleson Police Department handed out information such as pamphlets on identity theft and drugs to coloring books and stickers for the children.
National Night Out was previously held in August, but the event was moved to October to take advantage of cooler weather.
National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and watching.
For information about setting up a Neighborhood Crime Watch group or signing up for e-mail crime alerts, e-mail Community Resource Officer Mike Owen at mowen@burlesontx.com.

Don’t cross the
double yellow line
Burleson Police officers are stepping up enforcement of the traffic law in hopes of preventing a head-on collision.
According to Texas Traffic Code 545.055, a driver can not drive on the left side of any pavement striping designed to mark a no-passing zone.
That includes double yellow lines.
One problem area is Hidden Creek Parkway, between Irene Street and
Wilshire Boulevard.
Burleson officers have worked more than two dozen accidents in that stretch of roadway in the past few months.
There are two lanes heading northwest and two lanes heading southeast on Hidden Creek Parkway. In order to avoid the left turn queue at Wilshire Boulevard, drivers are traveling in the two-way left-turn lane for a distance, then must enter an oncoming dedicated left-turn lane that serves as an entrance to the back of Walgreen’s Pharmacy.
“If the double yellow line is on the right side of your car, you’re on the wrong side of the road,” said Burleson Traffic Sgt. Sean Bolton.
