In the two months since the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Burleson came to a close, chairwoman Brenda Gammon has received almost another $40,000.
At the event’s conclusion, $226,794 had been raised for the cause. Since then $38,802 has been received.
“We have had lots of people turning in checks after the event,” Gammon said. “Some are people who started fundraisers the night of, and lots of people sent out e-mails that said, ‘The event was really successful’ and brought in more money that way.”
Funds may be donated until Aug. 31, when the final total will be revealed, Gammon said.
Gammon said she was overwhelmed and thrilled about the amount raised so far.
She will pass the torch to Ray Kramer, who will assume the role of Relay chair Sept. 1.
She said Relay For Life will always be a dear cause to her.
“I’m not quitting Relay; I will always be involved,” said Gammon, a cancer survivor. “But my daughter has a baby due Jan. 3, and it’s so hard to balance family, church and Relay.”
She said she looks forward to advising other North Texas Relays, which she has been asked to do because of the Burleson Relay’s success.
