Bransom’s changes name to City Market

Longtime Burleson business Bransom’s Food Market has a new name.
After operating in the same Old Town location for more than half a century, the grocery store now bears the name City Market, owner Kurt Jaeger said.
“City Market is the name of the other corporation I own,” he said. “But I’ve sold the other ones, so this is the only City Market; I’ve owned the store for five years. Ms. Bransom has been wanting me to change the name, but she has been very nice in letting me keep it.”
Cindy Bransom sold the store to Jaeger several years after Richard Bransom, her husband and the business’ former owner/operator, passed away.
Jaeger said the change has drawn mixed reviews.
“A lot of people were kind of sad, but a lot have been supportive,” he said. “But it’s the same people, the same owners, the same good service. And we’ll get you a free popcorn or ice cream on your way out.”
New signs will not be installed for a while, but new employee uniforms and a temporary banner with the new name are in place, Jaeger said.
The name change came four days after the Burleson City Council allowed the business to sell beer and wine during its June 26 meeting.
Councilman Carter Mahanay, who was vocal about his opposition to Bransom’s selling alcohol, said he thinks the name change is “kind of sad,” but he appreciates Jaeger’s contributions to Burleson and wishes him the best.
“I have nothing but praise for what Kurt’s done down there,” he said. “I think he’s been very good for the community.”
Mahanay said he worked at Bransom’s throughout high school and has known the Bransom family for decades.
