Johnson County schools were well represented on the District 8-4A softball team, as Alvarado, Cleburne and Joshua earned several honors from the district’s coaches.
Joshua center fielder Ashley Clifton was named the district’s offensive player of the year and Cleburne third baseman Jenna Richardson was the co-defensive player of the year.
She shared the honor with Stephenville first baseman Allison Snow.
Lady Owl pitcher Kayci Wilson was the district’s pitcher of the year.
Aledo pitcher Whitney Canion was the most valuable player of the district, and her battery mate, catcher Easton Cook, was named the catcher of the year.
Aledo’s Kevin Cook and Crowley’s Ladine Thomas were co-coaches of the year.
Crowley also received a pair of superlative awards, as pitcher Megan Spence was the newcomer of the year and Amber Spence, who caught and played left field, was the district’s top utility player.
Cleburne’s Katie Cowan and Joshua’s Heather Dennie were the first-team pitchers and the district’s coaches selected 12 first-team infielders — five of which were shortstops.
Shortstops Maegan Maldonado (Alvarado), Shelby Contreras (Cleburne), Bailey Sanders (Joshua), Lyndi Samuelson (Aledo) and Sarah Pack (Stephenville) were selected for the first team.
Four third basemen also made the first team, as Brandi Morris (Alvarado), Jordan Palmer (Joshua) Haylee Bell (Aledo) and Julie Graham (Crowley) were first-team selections.
Brooks said the Lady Owls don’t get as caught up in individual success as much as helping the team win.
The other spots on the first team infield went to Alvarado pitcher Kayla Berry, Mineral Wells catcher Karina Gonzales and Crowley first baseman Lauryn Smith.
Alvarado center fielder Marissa Phillips joined a pair of area left fielders, Cleburne’s Kimera Lowrie and Joshua’s Candice Gauntt on the first team. The other first-team outfielders were Crowley’s Cassie Campbell, Aledo’s Hillary Brann and Stephenville’s Sonya Curtis.
Cleburne catcher Kiley Beard and first baseman Jessie Richardson joined Joshua second baseman Taylor Dear and Alvarado catcher Mandie Maldonado on the second team infield.
All of the Lady Jackets’ starters earned a spot on the team.
Alvarado’s Megan Thompson, Cleburne’s Vayle Anderson and Joshua’s Laci Guthrie were selected for the second-team outfield.
Cleburne’s Alyssa Kieschnick and Shanna Lundy were honorable mention selections for the Lady Jackets. Joshua catcher Caitlin Force also nabbed an honorable mention selection.
