The Burleson ISD board of trustees accepted Charter Builders’ guaranteed maximum price for one phase of a second high school during a meeting Monday.
Charter Builders reviewed proposals for a civil package from subcontractors last month before crafting a budget based on bidders’ best offers.
“We were able to attract a large number of vendors because of the size of the project, and I am confident we got a very good price,” Superintendent Mark Jackson said.
The package’s guaranteed maximum price is $8,936,099, which encompasses the initial sitework, earthwork, concrete work, general conditions and waterproofing, among other fees.
The rest of school’s construction expenses are part of the project’s building package, but Charter has not yet arrived at a guaranteed maximum price for this step of the project, said Ronald Kuehler, assistant superintendent for business and support services. The projected cost for the school is estimated to be between $120 million and $125 million.
Board members also rescinded their previous decision to rename Mound Elementary to Bobby Spurlin Elementary on Spurlin’s request. The board decided at its March 10 meeting to name the school after educator and board member Spurlin to honor his career, but some parents protested the decision at later meetings.
“I would like to request that the board reverse its decision to change the name of Mound Elementary and withdraw my name from consideration as the school name,” Spurlin said in a letter to the board. “With all the objection to the change, there is no joy or honor left for me and my family.”
The board also changed a policy designed to encourage school uniforms or standardized dress in Burleson ISD campuses.
The new policy allows dress-code changes to be made if 52 percent of a school’s parents vote for the changes. The former policy required affirmative votes from 60 percent ofthe parents.
“We’d like to give campuses more flexibility, especially the new campuses,” Jackson said.
The board will also form a study committee made up of parent-teacher association officers, parents and students at Burleson High School. The committee will prepare a dress-code recommendation for Jackson’s review. The board would have to approve the recommendation.
