Courtney Castillo’s tie-breaking goal with less than one minute left in regulation ended Burleson’s season in heartbreaking fashion, as the Elks dropped a 3-2 decision to the San Angelo Central Bobcats on March 25 at Elks Stadium.
The Elks end the season with an overall record of 14-11.
Castillo got the deciding goal off of a Burleson goal kick that didn’t go where head coach Pete King wanted it to.
“Our goal kicks aren’t usually that low, with the wind to our back,” King said. “He was trying to rush it and he didn’t lift [the ball] and it caught us off guard. It was a good move by [Castillo] and he got a great shot.”
The Bobcats took a 2-0 lead into halftime, both goals scored by Austin Hawk, the first one unassisted, and Castillo picking up the assist on the second.
The Elks’ Chad Eply scored 11 minutes into the game, but the referees ruled that a Burleson player was offsides and waved off the goal.
“With the wind, we changed our tactics a little and we didn’t mark them tight enough,” King said. “We weren’t putting the kind of pressure on them we needed to.”
In the second half, Burleson quickly cut the Bobcat lead in half with a Kody Cross goal 3:30 into the second frame, assisted by midfielder Edward Rockers.
After several missed opportunities, Cody Molinar tied it up for the Elks with 8:29 to go.

Crowley boys, girls advance
Crowley sent both of its soccer teams to the regional quarterfinals after the boys and girls teams earned March 25 victories.
The boys were led by two Felipe Messias goals in a 3-1 victory over Corsicana, while the girls blanked Dallas Seagoville 2-0.
Lauren Doyal had a goal for the Lady Eagles and assisted on another goal, this one from Sarah Duvall.
Cesar Ortiz picked up assists on both of Messias’ goals, and Aaron Jones scored for the Eagles off an assist by Steffan Taylor.
