Burleson ISD approves new scholarship fund

Burleson ISD school board members Oct. 22 unanimously approved the creation of a scholarship fund for Burleson High School graduates.
The fund, designed to be a nonprofit, will work alongside the city of Burleson and the Burleson Education Foundation, Superintendent Mark Jackson said.
The financial impact of creating the scholarship fund will not be significant, Jackson said.
The superintendent estimated that about $25,000 from the school district would be needed to begin the program, a figure the city plans to match. BISD’s portion will come from the school district’s budget.
The fund will operate on a sliding scale, based on academic performance and length of tenure at BISD schools.
Jackson outlined the program in great detail and noted that districts across the nation have similar programs.
Board members voiced concern as to whether the new fund would be a competitor or ally of the education foundation. The education foundation offers a handful of selective scholarships annually.
Richard Crummel, executive director for learning supports and public information, said the only competition would be a result of fundraising efforts and the new fund would not interfere with the education foundation.
“This will be a big asset to us,” Crummel said.
Mayor Ken Shetter presented the idea to the school board in August, but he did not spell out the components needed to make it successful.
Jackson and his team took the idea and formulated a plan for implementation.
The title for the director of this project will be “coordinator of advanced academic programs,” and Jackson said the search for a qualified individual would begin immediately. No decision was made on the director’s salary.
Board members also voted to approve the purchase of voice-mail hardware and software for the district, joined the city in taxing goods in transit and approved construction of a gas line.
Informational reports from the maintenance department, custodial services, data information and technical services were heard.
Board members will consider allowing Masonic Lodge No. 649 to place cornerstones at the two new campus locations. Construction reports rounded out the agenda before the board went into executive session to discuss personnel.
No action was taken after the executive session.
