BURLESON — The first time the Burleson Elks met the Trimble Tech Bulldogs this season, double overtime was needed to secure the result.
Monday night’s game was exactly the opposite, as the Elks (6-6) held the Bulldogs (2-6) to the fewest points of any Burleson opponent this season, winning by a 59-30 scoreline.
A combination of good Elk defense and horrible Bulldog shooting in the first half gave Burleson a 30-10 lead at the half, with Damon Latham’s personal tally matching the entire Trimble Tech team in the first 16 minutes.
Burleson scored the first seven points of the game on two free throws from Brent Falls, a three-pointer from Bryce Herren and a Cletis Cabbil bucket. The Trimble Tech coach picked up a technical foul with 3:36 to play in the first quarter, and Latham sank both free throws, as he scored eight of the Elks’ last 11 points in the first, to give them an 18-4 advantage.
The Elks didn’t shoot as well in the second quarter, but the Bulldogs failed to sink anything until halfway through the period. A Falls basket with 4:39 left until the break gave the Elks their first 20-point lead, which they would take into the locker room.
Tech’s Eddie Sanders matched his team’s entire first half scoring in the third quarter, scoring 10 of his 12 on the night. Burleson, however, came through with enough offensive production to make sure they weren’t outscored in any quarter.
Dorian McCoy drove to the hoop and was fouled with exactly one second to play. He sank both shots from the charity stripe to give Burleson a 43-22 lead with one period to go.
The Elks could have shut down and settled for that advantage, but the offense would not be turned away. Michael Collins and Cletis Cabbil both scored from outside the arc as part of a 14-5 Elk burst in the first seven minutes of the quarter.
Tech’s Ronald Harvey fouled out of the game on a player control technical when he elbowed Jake Mullin in the eye after a rebound with 49.5 seconds left. Mullin missed both free throws, but made a contested shot from the same spot on the next possession to give Burleson its final tally.
Latham was the game’s statistical leader with 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Falls also recorded 13 points, as the only other Elk in double figures. Sanders got 12 points for Tech as the only Bulldog in double-figures in any category.
Burleson’s next game will at home against the Haltom Buffalos at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
