After struggling for a while in the second half, the Cleburne Lady Jackets put it together for the stretch run.
Katie Tull knocked down three triples in the fourth quarter, while Sara White and Janaye Richardson scored in the low post, leading Cleburne to a 40-34 victory over the Crowley Lady Eagles on Tuesday.
“I am very pleased with this win,” Cleburne head coach Mitzi Marquart said. “I felt we handled the ball pretty well, especially in the fourth quarter.”
The stats proved Cleburne (1-2) took care of the ball. The Lady Jackets turned the ball over just 10 times in the game, and only once in the fourth period.
Crowley (1-2) was bitten frequently by the turnover bug, losing the ball 22 times in the contest.
But it was the Lady Eagles who controlled the game in the first period.
Behind two inside buckets from Ryan Green, five points from Megan Dell and a bucket Erika Ware, the Lady Eagles worked out to an 11-4 lead on the Lady Jackets, who scored the next six points on a pair of free throws by Richardson, a bucket by Kyli Ginn and a runner from Macoyia Malone, pulling Cleburne to within one at 11-10.
However, Green scored Crowley’s next eight points, which gave the Lady Eagles a 19-13 lead.
But a three-pointer by Ginn sparked a quarter-ending 9-2 run, giving the Lady Jackets a one-point halftime advantage, 22-21.
For the first five minutes of the second half, neither team seemed to want to win. Cleburne notched the first points of the second half at the 2:55 mark of the third quarter on a pair of free throws from White.
Richardson followed up with a layup for a 26-21 Cleburne lead, only to see Crowley get baskets from Brittany Terry and Green to cut the deficit to one point by the end of the frame, 26-25.
The Lady Jackets extended their lead to nine points early in the fourth period as Tull hit back-to-back three-pointers, while White made a layup off a feed from Richardson, giving Cleburne a 34-25 edge.
But a 7-0 run by Crowley allowed the Lady Eagles to get back to within two points, 34-32.
However, Cleburne pulled away thanks to a bucket from Richardson and another threeball from Tull as the Lady Jackets earned their first win of the season.
“I’m happy with the win and how we have gotten better with each game,” Marquart said. “But we still have a lot to work on and we will continue to improve.”
Tull led Cleburne with 16 points and six steals, while Richardson and Ginn had seven points each.
Green paced Crowley with 16 points, nine boards and three blocked shots.
