Trailing by a point at the half, Cleburne head coach Jeff Cody was looking to execute a play at the beginning of the second half to give his Yellow Jackets some momentum.
And the play was excellently executed.
Senior guard Jacob Kelsey drained a three-pointer, sparking a 21-9 third-quarter run, which saw the Jackets run away from the Burleson Elks, 68-46.
“We made some mistakes, but we competed hard for 32 minutes,” Cody said. “We came out of the half looking to score and we did just that.”
Burleson head coach Ted Tomchesson said the difference between the first and second half was Cleburne’s execution and the Elks’ lack of it.
“They executed better than we did in the second and they outcoached us,” Tomchesson said. “Cleburne was better prepared than we were. We just weren’t ready to play.”
The Elks (0-1) had trailed by nine points early in the second period as Cleburne guard Chance Rosser hit a short baseline jumper for a 23-14 Yellow Jacket lead.
But a three-point play and dunk by 6-7 Burleson center Damon Latham, along with five points from Brent Falls, sparked the Elks to a 17-7 surge, allowing Burleson to take a 31-30 lead into the intermission.
Seemingly gaining the momentum, the Elks were unable to sustain it.
After the opening triple by Kelsey, Cleburne would get seven more points, which included a free throw from Field Reagan, a bucket by Shea McLean and back-to-back baskets from Kelsey as the Jackets opened up a 40-31 lead.
Burleson’s Cletis Cabbil did what he could to try to keep the Elks close, draining a pair of long three-pointers around a short jumper as Burleson trailed by seven, 46-39.
But another threeball from Kelsey, along with a pair of free throws by Brett Hamilton allowed Cleburne to take a 51-40 lead into the final eight minutes of the contest.
From there, it was all Cleburne as Kelsey scored five more points, while Hamilton added another four. The Jacket bench also saw significant minutes as Caleb Amis and Nick Passalugo connected on three-pointers during the waning moments of the victory.
“We had 14 guys play tonight,” Cody said. “Plus, we didn’t have but seven turnovers in the second half and I think we were a little deeper than they were. Our conditioning paid off in the fourth quarter.”
Kelsey led Cleburne with 20 points, four assists and three steals, while McLean had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. Reagan added nine points, seven rebounds and a blocked shot off the bench, while Hamilton pitched in nine points.
Latham paced Burleson with 11 points, while Falls finished with nine points. Cabbil added eight points and seven boards.
Cleburne is on the road at Ennis on Friday, while Burleson meets up with L.D. Bell, also on the road on Friday.
