JOSHUA — The Joshua Lady Owls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they beat the Burleson Lady Elks, 52-38, Tuesday night.
The result gives the Lady Owls a 2-1 record and drops the Lady Elks to 1-2.
The first half of the game was all Joshua, as the Lady Owls outscored the Lady Elks, 32-17.
Burleson gave the ball away to Joshua three times before being able to put any points on the board, falling behind 5-0.
The Lady Elks tied the game at 5-5 after a Aimee Badgett three-pointer, but the Joshua trio of Abby Babbitt, Elizabeth Dominguez and Sasha Sessums teamed up for 12 of Joshua’s 14 first-quarter points.
The Lady Owls were able to pull farther away from Burleson during a foul-filled second quarter, which saw two starters on each team pulled off the court for foul trouble.
Burleson pulled within six points with about three minutes to go until halftime, but baskets by Katlyn Mary and Babbitt gave the Lady Owls a 13-point advantage.
A Lauren Badgett two-pointer along with an Amber Graf free throw cut the margin to nine for Burleson, but buckets by Babbitt and Dominguez gave the Lady Owls a 15-point lead at the half.
The two sides were evenly matched in the third quarter, both scoring nine points each to maintain the 15-point margin going into the final stanza.
Joshua turnovers kept it from pulling ahead further, as Burleson’s Allison Gilbert recorded seven points in the quarter.
The fourth quarter saw the frustrations of earlier play reach a head, as each team had two players foul out.
Joshua’s Babbitt and Dominguez fouled out, quickly followed by Aimee Badgett and Gilbert for Burleson.
Gilbert free throws throughout the quarter cut the defecit for the Lady Elks, but it wasn’t enough to scratch out a win as the Lady Owls prevailed.
Joshua head coach Angela Drews was proud of her team’s play on the defensive end of the floor in the first half.
“Sasha Sessums, Abby Babbitt and Elizabeth Dominguez all did a good job on defense. We’ve been talking about controlling the boards, and I think that we did that tonight,” Drews said.
“Also, we didn’t lose our composure early. We made some early shots and kept our heads. We made some key free throws, and we also had some kids come off of the bench and give us a spark,” Drews added.
Burleson coach Joy Gafford said this game raised some concerns for her club.
“We really need to work on our teamwork. That’s not the team that I know. This game leaves us with a lot of unanswered questions,” Gafford said.
“We need to work on or shooting. When you can’t make a shot when you’re right underneath the goal, you’ve got some problems that we need to fix,” Gafford added.
Burleson is idle until a road trip to Fort Worth Western Hills next Tuesday, while Joshua travels to Keller Central on Friday.
