FORT WORTH — Despite a disappointing season, the Burleson Elks capped off the 2005 campaign with a convincing 48-16 win over Paschal Thursday night at Farrington Field.
The win improved Mel Maxfield’s Elks to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in District 4-5A, while the Panthers fell to 2-8 and 1-7.
Trailing 8-7 after the first quarter, Burleson put together two scoring drives to end the first half up, 21-8, and then rallied for 20 straight second-half points to put the game away.
Windsor Rippetoe, who put the Elks on the scoreboard on the game’s opening drive via a 7-yard run, went down with an injury in the midst of another Burleson scoring threat. On the ensuing play, Rippetoe’s backup, senior Bryan Moron, scampered 9 yards for the go-ahead score.
Paschal attempted to answer the drive, going for a fourth-and-5 at its 43 with 1:36 left in the first half.
Burleson took over on downs at the Panther 41 and scored three plays later when quarterback Jake Mullin hit Caleb Hodge for a 20-yard reception. The duo hooked up a second time on the two-point conversion to put the Elks up by 13 at the half.
Burleson scored on its first possession of the second half on a five-play, 55-yard drive. A 19-yard pass to Hodge set up Michael Stane’s 14-yard scoring jaunt and the Elk lead grew to 28-8.
Burleson’s most impressive drive came after a costly turnover by Paschal. The Panthers drove to the Burleson 25, but faced a fourth-and-10 situation. Brent Falls intercepted a Jess Brown pass on the fourth down play at the 6 and returned it to the 12.
From there, the Elks marched 88 yards in 16 plays and went up 35-8 on Stane’s 3-yard plunge into the end zone.
The Elk defense stepped up on Paschal’s ensuing drive. On second-and-16 at the Burleson 41, the Elks pressured Brown, who fumbled the ball at the 49. Burleson linebacker Craig Anthony picked up the loose ball and rambled 51 yards for the score.
Paschal cut the lead to 41-16 on its next drive as Brown connected with wide receiver Michael Sherman for 36 yards. However, Burleson backup quarterback Justin Lemish answered the drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Brad Schaefer to cap off the scoring.
Although Burleson dominated the game on the scoreboard, statistically, it was a close game. Burleson rushed for 208 yards on 39 carries, while holding Paschal to 111 yards on 38 rushes. The Panthers had the advantage through the air, 128 to 67.
Penalties played a key role in the game, as Paschal was flagged 14 times for 125 yards. Five of the 14 penalties were for 15 yards.
Stane led Burleson with 68 yards on 17 carries, Rippetoe had 55 yards on nine attempts, all in the first half, and Moron added 55 yards on seven carries. Hodge had two catches for 39 yards.
Matthew Sherman scored Paschal’s first touchdown in the first quarter on a 1-yard run.
