Dear Editor:
In the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month 1918, an armistice was declared ending the fighting of World War I.
Celebrating took place throughout the world. There were whistles, cheers and tears of joy, prayers of thanks, impromptu parades, ticker-tape parades and dancing in the streets. The “war to end all wars” had ended! In reality, the armistice was a ceasefire or truce. A peace settlement had not yet been resolved. This war had left over 10 million people dead and much of Europe in ruins.
Unfortunately, World War I was not “the war to end all wars.”
In 1954, Armistice Day was officially changed to Veterans Day. Nov. 11 is a day to pay tribute to all those who have served in this nation’s armed services. Now is the time to say thanks for all military service contributions.
Tri-Cities Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6872 and Ladies Auxiliary, Crowley, encourage all Americans to take time to recognize and pay tribute to all veterans, living and dead.
Members participate in the area celebrations for Veterans Day. In addition, the Post and Auxiliary place flags on veterans’ graves in the Crowley Cemetery for Veterans Day and Memorial Day. Flags are also placed at Caddo Cemetery in remembrance of veterans.
Wherever and however Veterans Day is being observed for 2005, all observances will have one common theme. All will pay tribute to the hundreds of thousands of men and women who have fought to defend their country and its allies and devoted their efforts to the preservation of freedom for us. The next time you see wreaths or flags being placed at veterans’ graves, veterans marching in parades, or our U.S. flag, remember:
1. Freedom is not free.
2. Veterans are the reason you are in a free democratic nation today.
