GRANBURY — Mathematically, the Burleson Elks can still return to the Class 5A playoffs.
Psychologically, their chances took a giant blow Friday night as they were upset by the previously winless Granbury Pirates, 28-24, in a District 4-5A game at Pirate Stadium.
The loss dropped the Elks to 3-5 overall this season. More important, they slipped to 2-3 in league play.
The Elks have games remaining at home against district-leading Mansfield Summit (7-1, 5-0) Friday and at Paschal (2-5, 1-3) the following Thursday.
If they win both of those games, they still have a shot at sneaking into the postseason.
But Friday’s loss was a crusher without a doubt. It also avenged a 50-9 Elks’ win over Granbury in Burleson last season.
Burleson had no trouble moving the ball. The Elks rushed for 327 yards and passed for 82.
When it mattered most, though, the Granbury defense held firm.
The Elks got the ball at their own 22 with 1:25 left in the game and no timeouts.
Quarterback Jake Mullin was tackled for no gain, followed by an illegal procedure penalty and three straight incomplete passes.
Quarterback Andrew Mellencamp scored the winning touchdown for Granbury on a 1-yard sneak with 3:47 to play. It finished off an 86-yard drive.
Mellencamp was 16-for-20 passing for 187 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercepted once, by Joel Chastain, the eighth interception of the season by the Elks.
Burleson took a 24-21 lead with 7:08 remaining on a 2-yard run by Windsor Rippetoe, his third touchdown of the night. He rushed for 179 yards with other scores of 10 and 43 yards.
Rippetoe’s final touchdown capped off an 80-yard drive that took nearly seven and a half minutes.
Michael Stane gained 127 yards rushing.
Following Chastain’s interception, the Elks drove from their own 12 to the Granbury 16 before the drive stalled.
Anthony Cook kicked a 33-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead.
As the first half was winding down, the Elks drove to the Granbury 15 after Brent Falls returned a kickoff 43 yards. A pass into the end zone fell incomplete and a 32-yard field-goal attempt came up short, leaving the Pirates with a 21-17 halftime lead.
