CROWLEY — Crowley (3-5, 1-2) shocked Everman (5-3, 2-1) 26-15 for its first win of the District 15-4A season.
With the victory, the Eagles created quite a scenario for the playoff race out of the league. Three teams — Everman, Midlothian and Waxahachie — are 2-1 in the district, while Alvarado, Timberview and Crowley are 1-2. Each team in the district still has a shot at the playoffs with two games remaining in the season.
The Crowley defense held a potent Everman offense to 183 total yards, while using big plays on offense.
The key play of the game was a Crowley fourth down from its own 27 leading the game, 17-15, and 2:34 remaining. Quarterback Colby Ray punched the ball up the middle for a 3-yard gain and a first down.
Two plays later, Drew Graham ran for a 65-yard touchdown to put the game out of reach at 24-15.
With less than a minute in the game, Corey Glodd sacked Everman quarterback Maurice Moore for a safety to cap off a fine defensive performance and make the final, 26-15.
Everman was held to five yards rushing in the second half.
The Bulldogs only spark came early in the fourth quarter when Moore hit Kris Adams streaking down the sideline for a 69-yard touchdown.
Moore added a two-point conversion, running the ball in from the swinging gate formation to bring the Bulldogs to within two at 17-15.
Everman got the ball back again after a Jonathan Lester punt, but again the defense stiffened as Craig Washington intercepted Moore at the Crowley 18 to snuff out Everman’s last chance to get back into the game.
Crowley was led on the ground by Drew Graham with 96 yards on just nine carries. Andrew Shaw added 64 yards on 20 attempts, while sophomore Colby Ray directed the option offense and picked up 60 yards rushing.
The Eagles play at Midlothian on Friday, while Everman looks to get back on track against Waxahachie on the road.
