A street maintenance worker who has overcome long odds and reflects both a strong work ethic and character was honored with the city of Burleson’s Employee of the Year award Tuesday.
Humberto Ramirez and Lisa Cauthern, the senior administrative secretary for the Burleson Police Department, were nominated for the award.
When Ramirez, 42, was hired by the city in February 2003, he was not an American citizen.
He has since secured his citizenship, successfully relocated his family to Burleson, and has attended city-sponsored English as a Second Language classes to improve his English-speaking skills.
“Humberto is respected by all of the employees he works with,” Rey Gonzales, assistant director of public works, said. “He’s willing to take on any task and will work hard to make sure the job is done well. I have received much praise from other employees concerning Humberto’s willingness to help. He is an asset to the department and to the city as a whole.”
Ramirez works with the concrete crew. In the past, when the city handled the trash collection, he often assisted the solid waste crew when it was shorthanded.
Humberto’s family includes his wife, Angelica, and three children, 21-year-old son Hugo Humberto, 11-year-old daughter Angelica and 8-year-old daughter Adamary.
Ramirez’ daughters attend Taylor Elementary, where Humberto takes an active role in their education.
“His dedication to work is only surpassed by his dedication to his family,” Gonzales said. “I’m glad to have him on our team.”
