The Burleson city council approved the official name for the city’s new recreation center and the funding to fill it with exercise equipment at a regular meeting Dec. 21.
The center, under construction, is located at 550 N.W. Summercrest in Bartlett Park. The council approved construction in 2005 and now has a name with marketing potential, said Director of Parks and Recreation Peter Krause.
“We had some criteria for it. It was basically something that would recognize the citizens desire to build this world-class facility as well as something that would create a sense of cachet, something that could be used in marketing campaigns,” he said. “The BRC, the Burleson Recreation Center; you can take that acronym and get ‘The BRiCk.’”
The Community Services Committee presented the name to the council at the Dec. 7 meeting.
City Secretary Amanda McCrory said no one spoke at the public hearing on the name.
Krause said a climbing wall that will resemble a brick wall may be built as a tie-in to the theme.
“It’s a little behind schedule, but the months of September and October were not very kind to construction projects,” he said. “But we’re making good progress. We anticipate May 1, and we think we’ll be in substantial completion about mid-April.”
The council also approved a four-year capital lease purchase agreement with Chase Equipment Finance, Inc. for exercise equipment.
In addition to a down payment of $60,000, the equipment costs $225,018.09, with an annual interest rate of 3.5396 percent. Four annual lease payments of $61,201.03 will begin in 2011, according to city documents.
The council also approved a three-year licensing agreement for $69,684.79 with Dell that will provide volume-based pricing for Microsoft Office, Windows upgrades and Microsoft Client Access License Suites.
The cost is split among the general, water and other funds and will be offset with the cost of replacing PCs with computers that are already loaded with software, leaving a net cost of $39,385, according to city documents.
Mayor Ken Shetter gave a brief update on the status of the Texas 121 project. Once completed, 2.5 miles of toll road will be in the Burleson city limits, and the city will be responsible for the cost of right-of-way acquisition, McCrory said.
“We’re just trying to keep it on the radar because it’s been up for so long, we’re just trying to keep focused on it,” she said.
