The list of Republicans hoping to unseat U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, in November continues to grow.
Waco resident Chuck Wilson filed to compete in the March 2 Republican primary on Dec. 18.
Wilson is the fifth candidate to enter the race.
Others — including Waco resident Rob Curnock, who ran against Edwards in 2008 — are expected to enter the race soon. Candidates have until Jan. 4 to file.
Wilson earned a business degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s degree in international business from Baylor University.
Wilson worked 10 years as a CIA case officer, winning unit awards for his role in the capture of Carlos the Jackal in 1994.
Wilson returned to Waco that year to manage a floor-covering company and now works in real estate.
“I want to provide the conservative representation that Congressional District 17 deserves,” Wilson said. “My hope is to work closely with the voters to execute a winning strategy to unseat Chet Edwards.”
Wilson said he is running on his life experience in government service and business and his conservative philosophy.
Wilson said his platform includes keeping the federal government from taking over the private sector, adhering to a pay-as-you-go federal budget, fighting to protect the unborn, reducing taxes to increase jobs, continuing the war on terror as a top national priority, increasing the military budget and supporting efforts to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
Wilson and his wife, Laurie Wilson, have two children.
