FORT WORTH — James Owen rushed for 249 yards and two touchdowns to lead Burleson to a 42-28 win over Paschal on Friday night at Farrington Field in Fort Worth.
The win kept Burleson’s District 3-5A playoff hopes alive. A win over Weatherford on Friday would secure a postseason spot for the Elks (3-6, 2-3).
The Elks and Panthers (3-7, 0-6) were tied 21-21 at halftime, but it was Burleson that took control in the second half. Paschal’s Chris King attempted and missed a 31-yard field goal on the Panthers’ opening drive of the third quarter.
Burleson took over and drove 80 yards in five plays before taking the lead on a Blake Smith 2-yard touchdown run. Owen sprinted for 56 yards on the first play of the drive to set the Elks up at the Panther 24. On third and nine at the 23, Elk quarterback Brice Warren hit Smith for a 21-yard gain to the 2.
The Burleson defense held strong on Paschal’s ensuing possession, forcing a turnover on downs at the Elk 15. Leading 28-21, Burleson drove 85 yards in seven plays to go up by 14. On second and eight at the Paschal 47, Owen sprinted through the Panther defense for the touchdown.
Paschal answered with a seven-play, 53-yard drive and cut the lead to seven at 35-28 with 8:05 left to play in the game. However, Burleson wasted little time pushing the advantage back to 14 when Warren hit tight end Patrick Houston for a 70-yard touchdown 12 second later to stretch the lead to 42-28.
Warren opened the scoring for Burleson with a 38-yard option-keeper for the touchdown on the Elks’ first drive of the game. Paschal tied the game on its first possession, needing just three pass plays before quarterback Brian Gallagher connected with receiver Travoy McCarver on a 21-yard touchdown.
The Elks answered the Panther touchdown with a four-play scoring drive. After three straight running plays that picked up 14 yards, Warren hit Smith for a 45-yard touchdown to give Burleson a 14-7 advantage with 6:41 to play in the first quarter.
Owen increased the lead on the Elks’ next possession when he scampered 68 yards for the score on the first play of the drive to make it 21-7.
Paschal rebounded to tie the game at 21-21 by halftime with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Emmanuel Smith capped off a 70-yard scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. The Panthers completed a 94-yard scoring drive with 21 seconds left in the first half when Gallagher found Sasha Lovett from 10-yards out to tie the game.
Lovett set up the touchdown with a 35-yard pass to McCarver on third and seven at the 45 on a fake double reverse.
Gallagher finished the first half 16-of-21 for 206 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. He finished the game 26-of-39 for 302 yards.
The Elks rushed for 432 yards on 40 attempts, and Warren finished 4-of-6 for 150 yards through the air with two touchdowns.
Blake Smith finished the game with 124 yards on 16 carries and hauled in two passes for 66 yards, including the touchdown. Houston had two catches for 84 yards.
Burleson hosts Weatherford at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Elk Stadium in the regular season finale for both schools.
