Elks return wealth of experience

Burleson head coach Ted Tomchesson returns eight players from last year’s 8-22 squad to varsity this season.
Senior Cameron Anderson, senior Jon Rutkoski, junior Joel Rodgers, junior Ryan Marsh, senior Jacob Rodgers, senior Mitchell Lott and senior Kaleb Cantrell.
Also returning are senior Rico Leggett and junior Blake Dunson, who is coming up from the junior varsity team last year.
Tomchesson said he is excited about the team’s potential this year and is expecting a lot out of several separate players.
“We expect Lott to be our sixth man,” Tomchesson said. “He has the ability to be a pretty explosive scorer. We’re also expecting a lot from Leggett, who is coming up from junior varsity. Cantrell has the ability to be a starter. We think he can do a great job for us, too.”
Tomchesson also addressed the issue of leadership with his team and said he feels some of his returning starters from last year will carry the torch this season.
“I look to Anderson and Rutkoski as the leaders since they’ve already got a year under their belt,” Tomchesson said. “Hopefully, they’ll gain from that experience and lead us in the right direction.”
Tomchesson said the Elks’ depth will dictate the style of his defense and his offense will be based on getting into the lane quickly.
“We’re primarily a man-to-man team,” Tomchesson said. “With our depth we’re looking to be a bit more uptempo and use more of a trapping style.
“We’ll run a spread-motion offense and try to attack the goal with cutters. We want to try to get the best bucket we can as quick as we can.”
Tomchesson said he expects his team to gel after having played together in the offseason and winning their first few games will help set the tone for the rest of the season.
“Our strength will be our team chemistry,” Tomchesson said. “They played a lot in the summer and now in the fall. They can read each others’ movements before they do it.
“We’re going to be a better shooting team this year. Hopefully we’ll be able to get to the line a little bit more. Our big key is getting off to a quick start, such as winning two or three of our first four games. We’ve got to get more physical on defense.”
