The Crowley boys basketball team is looking to mirror last year’s success despite losing six seniors to graduation.
Two of those seniors are now playing basketball at the collegiate level.
Tim Meadows is now playing at Prairie View A&M and Colby Ray is on the team for Concordia University in Austin.
Returning for the Eagles are junior Scout Gibson, senior Kevin Ray, junior Chi Chi Onyekanne and junior Derek Bunting.
Crowley head coach Robert Hale said he expects Ray, Onyekanne and Gibson to play important roles for the Eagles.
“Kevin and Chi Chi will probably be our leaders,” Hale said. “Scout is also a pretty good leader. These three will be important because they were with us last year.
“Kevin and Chi Chi both started a lot last year. One of them started all the time and if one of them wasn’t starting, the other one was. In district they both started quite a bit.”
Hale said the Eagles’ strategy on both ends of the floor depends on what the other team brings to the table.
“We just want to play good basketball,” Hale said. “If it’s an up tempo game, we just want to be smart and try not to throw it away. If it’s a chess game, and each team is trying to feel the other out, we want to do the same thing and adjust to whatever is thrown at us.
“We need to play good smart basketball, take good shots and play tough. It always comes down to that if you’re going to win games. We try and do that all the time because that’s what it’s going to boil down to. Those four kids, we’re expecting a lot from them.”
Hale said he’s expecting to get some help from kids playing other sports and from those who weren’t on the varsity last year.
“We hope to get some help from some kids in football,” Hale said. “Some of our other kids who didn’t get varsity experience last year will come on and help us, too.”
Looking at the competition in District 8-4A, Hale said the additions of new schools has made the outlook tougher.
“The district is definitely improved,” Hale said. “They added Arlington Seguin, Mansfield Timberview and Granbury. It’s going to be a really strong basketball league. It adds to the flavor. As the competition picks up, your performance picks up.”
Hale said the key for his team’s success this year comes down to one thing.
“Attitude is always the key to success,” Hale said. “That’s why it’s so important. It’s critical. The teams that don’t know or understand that, they don’t get to enjoy that success. Anyone who’s ever been there and has ever been in that arena knows that from the very beginning.”
