Dear Editor:
If you live in the Johnson County portion of the Burleson ISD, you will have a proposition to create a Hill College District in Burleson on your ballot. We are writing to urge you to vote for the Hill College proposition.
If the proposition passes, Hill College will build a new, greatly expanded campus in our community with full course and program offerings. Many programs that cannot be offered in Burleson now will be available, such as nursing, law enforcement, computer science, fire science, echocardiography, pharmacy tech and many others.
Continuing education courses, performing arts programs and a library will also be available at the new campus for use by students and the community.
The tax levied under the proposition would have limited impact. It is capped at 5 cents per $100 value. With a general homestead exemption of $5,000 and a $10,000 homestead exemption for those over 65, most homeowners would pay less than $5 per month.
Also, over time the tax rate decreases as property values increase, so the tax rate can never be more than 5 cents per $100 value, but it will decrease in the future. If you’re wondering whether this will be a good “value” for you and the community, consider the following:
zx If the proposition passes, Burleson students will pay the in-district tuition rate of $54 per credit hour rather than the $70 out-of-district rate.
zx The average Burleson student would save at least $1,000 per year in gas and tuition by attending Hill College, Burleson rather than Tarrant County College South.
zx Senior adult programs — educational and cultural classes that can be taken at the college — will be available at greatly reduced rates.
zx Every dollar invested in a higher education system returns $5.50 to the local economy.
zx Hill College would provide high-quality, affordable education that would help Burleson citizens find better jobs and earn higher wages.
zx If the proposition passes it will be good for our economy. Students and staff will spend money at local businesses and contribute to our local tax base.
zx The proposition would be good for economic development. One of the top considerations for businesses looking to locate, relocate or grow is the availability of a qualified workforce.
zx If you have a child enrolled in dual-credit courses in high school, you would save enough to cover several years’ worth of the tax.
zx Many cultural enhancements, including concerts, theatrical programs and art galleries would be made available to the community.
zx If the proposition passes Texas Wesleyan is committed to expanding its Burleson offerings and other 4-year institutions would offer programs in Burleson as well.
Voting for the Hill College proposition is the best thing we can do to make our community a truly great place to live, learn, work and play! If you have any questions please let us know. We could even have someone from Hill College contact you if you need more information about the impact of the proposition. For your convenience we have included early voting information below.
If you don’t live in the Johnson County portion of BISD, particularly if you already live in a Hill College district and know the value, please pass along this information to someone you know who would benefit!
Early voting is going on from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today through Friday at the Johnson County Subcourthouse at 247 Elk Drive, across from Burleson High School, in Room 104.
