HALTOM CITY — Richland kept its unbeaten streak alive by dismantling the Burleson Elks 44-21 on Friday night at Birdville Stadium in Haltom City.
The Rebels improved to 6-0 overall, but more importantly to 2-0 in District 3-5A. Burleson fell to 2-5 on the season and 1-2 in league play.
Richland jumped out to a 28-point halftime advantage behind two touchdowns each from Stephen Collins and Phillip Gonzales.
Collins scored on runs of 15 and 1 yard, respectively, while Gonzales hauled in a 33-yard pass from Tyler Cotton and ran in another from 1-yard out.
Cotton was 13-of-20 in the opening half with 205 yards passing and finished 17-of-27 for 256 yards.
Phillip Anderson scored Richland’s other first-half touchdown on a 40-yard pass from Cotton.
Joey Aylesworth scored the first touchdown of the game when he scooped up a Richland fumble and raced 75 yards on the third play of the night to give Burleson a 7-0 lead.
But Richland then scored 44 straight points to put the game away. And the Rebels did it in quick fashion early.
On its ensuing possession after the Aylesworth score, Richland needed just three plays to tie the game.
A 37-yard strike to Justin Erickson from Cotton put the ball at the Elk 15.
Collins scored on the next play for the tying points.
Richland capitalized on a Burleson miscue when punter Trey Castor allowed the ball to slip through his hands for a 31-yard loss to the Elk 9.
The Rebels took over and scored in two plays on Collins’ second score.
Burleson quarterback Corey Bailey threw an interception four plays later and the Rebels took a 21-7 lead when Cotton hit Anderson from 40 yards away on the ensuing play.
Burleson lined up for a 38-yard field goal attempt by Castor in the second quarter; however, Ryan Tice blocked the kick and teammate Jordan Maldonado recovered the ball at the Richland 25.
Six plays later Cotton connected with Gonzales from 33 yards out to make it 28-7.
The Elks’ James Owens returned the ensuing kickoff 46 yards to the Richland 31 to give Burleson a chance to score before the second half.
But Bailey came up short on a fourth and 9 at the Rebel 20 after a 2-yard gain.
Fourteen plays later, Gonzales scampered in from 1-yard out with three seconds left in the first half to make it a 35-7 contest.
A safety by Josh Shim in the third quarter and a Justin Kouns 1-yard run accounted for Richland’s second-half points.
Blake Smith and James Owen scored on runs of 7 and 4 yards in the fourth quarter for Burleson’s final two touchdowns.
Smith led all rushers with 71 yards on 18 attempts.
