A missed extra point by Haltom with 3:45 to play in the game ensured Burleson a 14-13 victory and its first District 3-5A win.
Dexter Braziel scored from 3-yards out after a botched snap on a punt attempt by Burleson gave Haltom the ball at the Elk 15 with 5:17 to play in the game. But the point after attempt by Juan Dominguez sailed left.
Burleson managed to run out the clock on its ensuing possession for the one-point victory. The win improves the Elks to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in league play heading into next week’s action against Richland. Haltom remains winless at 0-6 and 0-2.
After a scoreless first quarter Burleson scored its first touchdown with no time remaining in the second quarter. Kicker Trey Castor lined up for a 20-yard field goal attempt with three seconds remaining in the first half. Haltom’s Deandre Holmes blocked the kick; however, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty negated the play and gave Burleson a first and goal at the 1 with no time left on the clock.
Running back James Owen took the ball in on the free play and Castor booted the extra point for the 7-0 advantage at the half.
The drive was set up by the lone turnover in the game. With just more four minutes remaining the first half, Castor lined up to punt the ball from the Elk 29. Braziel fumbled the ball at the Haltom 25 and the Elks’ Patrick Houston recovered the ball at the Buffalo 18.
Eight plays later Burleson lined up for the controversial field goal attempt. The unsportsmanlike penalty was called on the Buffalos for climbing over the top of the Burleson offensive front in an attempt to block the field goal. The automatic first down gave the Elks one more chance to punch it into the end zone.
Haltom opened the second half with a 10-play drive culminating in a 14-yard scoring toss from Arron Shockey to James Pearson to tie the game at 7-7. Burleson had a chance to stop the drive when the Elk defense stopped Haltom running back Shaq Mathis on fourth and 1 and the Burleson 13, but an offsides penalty gave the Buffalos new life with a fresh set of downs.
Burleson countered on its next possession with a 17-play, 80-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead on Blake Smith’s 1-yard plunge. The Elks ran the ball all 17 plays using four different running backs. Owen led all rushers with 90 yards on 20 attempts. Smith finished with 57 yards on 23 carries and quarterback Corey Bailey had 48 yards on 13 attempts.
Burleson ran 65 plays and gained 194 yards rushing on 63 attempts. The Elk defense held Haltom to 95 yards on the ground on 24 carries and 42 yards through the air. Pearson led the Buffalos with four catches for 23 yards.
