FORT WORTH — On the eve of its homecoming, North Crowley (1-5, 1-1) fell to Richland (5-0, 1-0) 35-28 in overtime on Friday night.
Richland struck first on its opening possession with a 6-play 63-yard drive. They moved the ball in several big chunks, and Stephen Collins punched the ball in on a 5-yard run.
There were no more scores until the second quarter.
After a quick punt by the Rebels quarterback Tyler Cotton gave the Panthers the ball back with one second left in the half, Panthers running back Liqour Lockhart had a 39-yard run to get the Panthers to their own 40.
On the first play of the second quarter, North Crowley ran a fake reverse and wide receiver Aaron Morris threw a 60-yard strike to Terrance Crumley for the Panthers first score of the game.
The Panthers scored twice more in the quarter on two John Paul Coomers touchdown tosses to give the Panthers a 21-7 lead at the half.
After the half, the Rebels’ defense forced three and outs on the Panthers first two possessions of the half. On North Crowley’s third possession, the Rebels forced a fumble that was recovered at midfield.
Richland’s offense scored on its opening possession, and capitalized on the North Crowley fumble to tie the game at 21-21.
On the next possession, North Crowley was forced to punt after six plays, but the Rebels fumbled and a Roston Tatum recovered and gave North Crowley the ball on the Richland 25.
The Panthers failed to get a first down and turned the ball over on downs to Richland in three plays.
On both Richland possessions, the Panthers defense forced a three-and-out, and on the one Panther possession, the Rebel defense forced a three-and-out.
On the next North Crowley possession with 2:15 remaining, the Panthers drove 61 yards to score the go-ahead touchdown on a pass from Coomers to Tatum.
With 54 seconds left on the clock and one time remaining, the Rebels had to move the ball 73 yards to have a chance to tie the game.
Tyler Cotton was able to pick up 15- and 20-yard gains and get out of bounds to stop the clock.
The Rebels moved the ball down to the 5-yard line with 10 seconds left. On a third-and-2, Cotton dashed to the 2 yard line to pick up a first down.
On the next play as North Crowley coaches were running on the field trying to call a time out, Cotton threw a touchdown pass to Justin Erickson.
The extra point sent the game into overtime.
Richland received the ball first and scored on a 3-yard scamper by Phillip Gonzales to go up, 35-28.
North Crowley took over the ball at the 25-yard line and lost yardage on the first two plays. The final two plays resulted in incompletions and Richland got the victory.
