ABILENE — Burleson went into Abilene with upset on its mind as it opened district play against the seventh-ranked Eagles. But Abilene overpowered the Elks 49-14 behind three touchdown tosses from Stephen Warren and three rushing touchdowns from Zach Bass.
Abilene had only one drive in the first half that didn’t result in a score of some kind.
The first score was a 27-yard pass to Tevin Wiley from Warren, the second was a 9-yard run by Herschel Sims and the third was a 4-yard touchdown run by Bass.
The Eagle defense was able to force four first-half fumbles on the way to taking a 42-0 lead at halftime.
Burleson’s Blake Smith prevented the shutout in the third quarter with a 2-yard run, but the Eagles answered as Warren threw his third touchdown pass of the night to make the score 49-7.
In the fourth quarter, Corey Bailey broke free for a 42-yard run to get Burleson into double-digits on the scoreboard, but that was all the Elks could muster.
The Eagles balanced their offensive attack by combining 154 yards on the ground with 183 passing yards.
Warren finished 13-of-20 passing on the night.
The Elks had recovered one Eagle fumble and intercepted a Warren pass.
Burleson finished with 286 yards on the ground on 50 carries, and 13 yards through the air on Brice Warren’s lone completion.
Smith finished with 76 yards on 17 carries for the Elks and Corey Bailey had 85 yards on seven carries. Theo Hollars had 44 yards on nine carries and James Owen pitched in 37 yards on nine carries.
For Abilene, Bass was the rushing yards leader as he gained 114 yards on 14 carries, with three scores.
Warren spread the ball around, throwing completions to six different receivers.
