HALTOM — Both North Crowley and Haltom were looking for their first win on Friday night, but only one would be able to achieve that goal.
North Crowley defeated Haltom 24-21 behind a 35-yard field goal by Jacob Smith with 1:27 left in the game.
The first half started with North Crowley’s Larry Mitchell returning a punt for a touchdown, but North Crowley’s offense could not help out the defense and special teams.
Haltom ended up scoring twice in the first half with a 12-yard hookup between Josh and Arron Shockey.
In the second quarter, Dexter Braziel had a run in which he burst into the North Crowley secondary for a touchdown run of 33 yards.
Haltom was driving to start the third quarter, but a run for a loss and a long sack forced the Buffaloes out of field goal range.
Haltom turned the ball over on downs at the North Crowley 20-yard line.
On the next play, quarterback John Paul Coomers handed off to Terrance Crumley on what appeared to be a motion sweep, but Crumley pulled up and threw an 80-yard pass to a wide open Roston Tatum for a touchdown.
Crumley also caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from Coomers where he outran both of the Haltom safeties and made it to the end zone.
On North Crowley’s next possession on the Panthers’ 40-yard line, Coomers pulled the ball on a zone read play and had the ball poked away by Haltom’s Deandre Holmes.
Holmes recovered the fumble and rumbled 40 yards to the end zone.
Two possessions later, North Crowley got its chance to go ahead as Haltom’s punter shanked the kick for a 9-yard punt that gave the Panthers the ball on Haltom’s 46.
The Panthers then drove the ball 28 yards to Haltom’s 18-yard line where Jacob Smith split the uprights with a 35-yard game winning field goal.
Haltom got the ball back with 1:21 left on the clock and two time outs.
The Buffaloes steadily lost yardage on all but their last play from scrimmage and failed to gain a first down.
North Crowley took over on downs and knelt the ball to run out the remaining clock.
North Crowley (1-4, 1-0) hosts the Richland Rebels for homecoming on Friday.
