FORT WORTH — The Crowley Eagles emerged the victor in a turnover-filled battle at Eagle Stadium on Friday night 28-20 over the visiting Joshua Owls.
The game featured seven interceptions with five of those coming from the Owls.
Weston Foster tossed three picks and Jesse Williamson threw two.
The teams were just about equal on paper, but it was Crowley who was able to put the ball in the end zone when it counted.
“I give them [Crowley] all the credit in the world,” Joshua head coach Phil Shaffer said. “They came and gave us some different looks. We didn’t play very well tonight at all. I take full responsibility.”
The Owls opened the game by marching down the field on a 12-play, 60-yard drive that led them to the Eagle 18 yard line. but on third-and-10, Foster tossed his first interception.
Crowley was able to convert the turnover into points as Andre Dean led the Eagles on a nine play, 96-yard drive that was capped off by a 35-touchdown pass from Dean to LaBradford Harrold.
“We got the ball in the red zone, we turned it over,” Shaffer said. “I thought we were ready to play coming off the big win.”
Joshua got the ball back but was forced to punt after a three-and-out.
After forcing the Eagles to punt late in the first quarter, the Owls got another chance.
On second-and-6, Foster tossed his second interception which set up another Crowley scoring drive, which was capped by a 34-yard touchdown run by Chris Allen with 10 seconds left in the first.
The Eagles led 14-0 after one quarter of play.
“I thought it was great especially after last week,” Crowley head coach Brad McCone said. “We had some breakdowns in the secondary last week and this week we didn’t.”
In the second quarter, the Owls were able to chip into the lead.
Joshua went on a 12-play, 65-yard drive that was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown toss from Foster to Nate Belvin.
Crowley got the ball back and tried to answer, but Dean threw the first of his two interceptions on second-and-18 from the Eagle 49.
Joshua got the ball on their own 22-yard line and after Josh Sigmon broke free for a 51-yard run to put the Owls at the Crowley 27-yard line, Jesse Williamson threw his first interception.
The Eagles were unable to score, but led 14-7 at the half.
Crowley opened the second half with a score as Allen capped off a seven-play, 57-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. Allen finished with 130 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns.
The third quarter ended with the Eagles leading 21-7.
Crowley extended its lead to 28-7 after a 25-yard run by Allen.
The Owls caught fire in their last two drives as Foster found Jordan Allan in the end zone for an 8-yard strike and then took it in himself on the next drive with a 5-yard run.
Foster finished the game 13-of-30 with 139 yards and two touchdowns.
