The identity of a truck driver who died from injuries in a Aug. 18 crash on U.S. Highway 69 was released Thursday by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, nearly three days after the fatality collision north of McAlester. Danny R. Sparks, 57, of Burleson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by a state medical examiner who said the man died of massive internal and external injuries. The driver’s name was withheld until troopers notified Sparks’ family.
Sparks was driving a 2006 Freightliner that went off U.S. 69 southbound about at 12:40 p.m., 7.5 miles north of McAlester. According to OHP, the truck ran off the roadway to the right for an unknown reason.
It struck a guardrail end, continued off the road into what was described as a deep ravine and struck a large tree. The rig caught fire, according to OHP.
In addition to the highway patrol, three fire engines responded to the scene with least one unit from the Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Office. A small section of one southbound lane was closed for a time Monday, in the immediate area of the accident, where emergency vehicles and personnel were working in.
