The Burleson City Council discussed establishing an exclusive license agreement for commercial solid-waste collection during Thursday night’s meeting.
The benefits of establishing an exclusive-license agreement include accurate accounting of license fees, increasing effectiveness of ordinance enforcement and reducing garbage-truck traffic on city streets, said Aaron Russell, Burleson’s director of public works.
Several city council members said they didn’t want the city to enter into an exclusive agreement for commercial pick-up, even if the city considered signing a deal for residential and commercial pick-up with the same company. They said they didn’t want an agreement that would lower the cost of residential pick-up by forcing commercial pick-up customers to absorb more of the expenses.
“I’m don’t think it’s fair to reduce the residential rate on the back of commercial customers,” said Mayor Ken Shetter.
Councilmen Dan McClendon and Carter Mahanay agreed.
“I’m all for not passing costs on to commercial customers,” said Mahanay.
He said that because residents routinely dump large pieces of trash or junk into businesses’ trash bins, commercial customers are already paying added costs.
“I find it very disconcerting that the city is thinking of taking it to one vendor,” said resident Jason Bagley, a stockholder in Area Waste Solutions and a longtime Burleson resident.
Shetter said he wants complete information comparing Burleson’s residential and commercial solid-waste pick-up policies before the council makes any decisions.
The council also appointed two community-at-large members to the Burleson Opportunity Fund Board of Directors. Shetter suggested Dan-O Strong, president of the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce, and Justin Bond of Chesapeake Energy as possible candidates. The board voted unanimously for the pair.
“I like that link to the chamber,” Shetter said about Strong and noted that Bond’s connections to Chesapeake will also be an asset because the company has been active in Burleson’s economy.
The council also:
