Family hopes to have ugliest door in U.S.

Most homeowners wouldn’t want others to criticize their houses, but one Burleson family hopes Web users find its front door to be the ugliest in the nation.
Lenore Merritt of Burleson entered a video of her home’s front door in Therma-Tru’s Ugliest Door in America contest with hopes of winning the grand prize — new doors worth up to $5,000.
Merritt’s submission, a short film with footage of her door’s mismatched hardware and streaky paint job, is pitted against four other video entries.
People can vote for the most unappealing door at www.myuglydoor.com.
Merritt said she entered the competition in June after hearing about it on the radio program “The Money Pit.” Her door was quickly chosen as one of the finalists, she said.
“When they announced the ugly door contest, I thought, ‘I could really use the $5,000 makeover you get if you win,’” she said. “It’s such a nice house, and it’s sad to have such an ugly front door on this beautiful house.”
Merritt’s video entry details why she thinks her door should win.
“A previous owner decided to repaint the metal door with some sort of outside paint ... you can actually see the brush strokes left behind by the brush, plus there are thin and thick spots, as well,” Merritt said. “Some friends of ours decorated our door with beautiful colored hearts a while ago. We thought it was so cute we left the hearts on for a few days. Big mistake. The adhesive bonded to the door and doesn’t want to come off.”
Merritt also said a storm tore off her house’s glass storm door some years ago, leaving bare hardware jutting from the door frame.
The other finalists have old sliding glass doors, a bright purple door and a sanded-down door missing its peep hole.
Merritt said she plans to e-mail her friends and family members and ask them to vote for her door, especially because of the hard time her children have given her about it.
“My daughter is self-conscious about it, and she would ask us to get a new door, which of course we couldn’t,” Merritt said.
The winners of Therma-Tru’s Ugliest Door in America contest will be announced in late August.
