Council examines police dept. assessment

Most Burleson residents feel safe in the city, city council members learned Thursday night.
The assesment was part of a presentation by Bradley Ford, who has worked with Dr. Alex Del Carmen to compose a strategic plan for Burleson police services over the last several months.
Del Carmen and his associates evaluated numerous facets of the Burleson Police Department and surveyed city residents to gain their perspective.
Only 3 percent of respondents have been victims of violent crime while living in Burleson, Ford said.
“We saw very positive results in regard to violent crime,” he said. “People just feel safe in Burleson as a whole. The results were very outstanding.”
Ford said the survey showed residents who worked with police officers also had positive feelings about the department. But he said the department could improve its communication with residents.
“Respondents are wanting police to keep them more informed of crime issues,” Ford said.
City departments are becoming aware of their technological capabilities in mass communication, Mayor Ken Shetter said.
“We’re very early on in our attempts to get there,” he said.
Final recommendations from Del Carmen’s consulting firm will be delivered to Police Chief Tom Cowan on July 28, Ford said, noting that the department’s future looks bright.
“Almost half of the people responding said they are willing to get involved in neighborhood-crime watches, which is great,” Ford said.
The council also approved a specific-use permit for Adrenaline Motorsports to put a corporate office in the commercial zoning district along Interstate 35W, south of Hidden Creek Parkway.
Bob Yonke, owner of Adrenaline Motorsports, said he will use the building for a professional racing team.
The council limited the specific-use permit to 10 years. The council will re-evaluate the property’s permit again at the end of that time.
“We are going to jump start the process of rejuvenating this area,” Yonke said of his immediate plans.
The council also revised the city’s sign ordinance to allow truck-mounted signs for the purpose of advertising social or cultural activities and messages for nonprofit entities within city limits.
The city cannot place restrictions about the purpose or content of the signs, but the signs can only be up for 30 days at a time, said Shai Roos, Burleson’s new director of planning and economic development.
