The Burleson City Council recently approved an ordinance to increase the residential trash-collection rate by $2.12 per month.
Because the rate shift passed on final reading, the new rate went into effect July 11.
Aaron Russell, Burleson’s director of public works, said the solid waste operations division is projected to be over budget by more than $163,000 by the end of the fiscal year because of the increased costs of fuel, equipment rentals, maintenance and printing related to the implementation of the curb-side recycling program.
Increasing the rates will also establish a reserve fund.
“When we set the rate, we set it on a schedule to not only overcome the shortfall but to have 60 days of operating costs in the reserve fund,” Russell said in an interview after addressing the council.
The solid waste operations division will reach this point in about 27 months, he said.
Sixty-four cents of the $2.12 increase will be used for operations, 40 cents will be placed in reserve funds, and 8 cents will be used to cover the shortfall in funds, Russell said.
Russell said city staff is working to minimize maintenance costs and fuel usage.
“We looking at ways to reduce fuel consumption by analyzing our routes and making sure they are as efficient as they can be,” he said.
Commercial rates will increase by 11.9 percent.
Class 1 customers will pay $21.23 for twice-a-week trash collection, and Class 2 commercial customers will pay $48.69 for twice-a-week collection and $94.21 for collection four times a week. Class 3 commercial customers will pay $94.21 for twice-a-week collection and $183.45 for collection four times a week.
The rate was set at $17.84 on Dec. 13 when curbside recycling was added to solid waste service.
