The future Bartlett Park Recreation Center exercise pool in Burleson will feature five lap lanes because of a partnership between Burleson ISD and the city.
The school district will pay a one-time lease payment of $957,154 to allow students to use the pool for swim team practices for the next 25 years. The agreement provides for an automatic 25 year extension unless either party ends the deal.
Peter Krause, director of Burleson’s parks and recreation department, called the agreement “a win-win situation.”
“We had originally hoped to have at least five lanes within the exercise pool for water aerobics and swimming lessons year-round,” Krause said. “But we saw that the need was not quite there.”
The lack of demand and budget constraints forced planners to reduce the number of lanes from five to two until the city struck a deal with the school district earlier this year.
“At a joint-use facility meeting, the consensus was the school district and the city should partner together to add back these lanes,” Krause said.
The nearly $1 million fee Burleson ISD will pay gives the district sole use of the lap pool for two hours a day Monday through Friday during the school year and nonexclusive use of the pool for two hours every Saturday while school is in session.
Krause said team will be provided an office to store their gear in, but the city will own the facilities.
If the future second Burleson High School has a swim team, those students will have access to the pool, said Ronald Kuehler, assistant superintendent of business and support services for Burleson ISD.
“As this district continues to grow, this partnership will be a very good thing,” he said.
Teamwork between the two entities is nothing new; they work together on an annual basis, he said.
Construction will probably start in September and end about January 2010, while an outdoor pool may be finished in May 2010 if finances permit, Krause said.
