BURLESON — Cleburne went into the championship game of the Quad Cities Summer Varsity League on a high after a last-second win over Burleson on June 30, but the Yellow Jackets couldn’t pull off the same feat against Everman, falling 45-44 at Burleson High School.
Earlier in the night, Robert White hit a fallaway 3-pointer at the buzzer as Cleburne claimed a 52-49 win over Burleson to reach the championship game.
The Elks held a 24-15 lead at the half after Matt Gardner hit a shot at the buzzer. Earlier in the half, Jon Rutkowski and Mitchell Lott each knocked down several field goals to give Burleson the lead.
Joel Rodgers opened the second half with five points as the Elks stretched the advantage to 29-16, but Cleburne outscored Burleson 37-19 the rest of the way to claim the come-from-behind victory.
In the final, Everman held a 45-40 lead with less than two minutes to play before White hit a layup to pull the Jackets to within three points.
Jacob Windell hit one free throw on consecutive possessions, cutting the deficit to 45-44 with eight seconds to play.
Cleburne sent Everman to the free throw line and the Bulldogs missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Jackets came down with the rebound and called a time out.
Cleburne put the ball in Ethan Anderson’s hands, but his 3-pointer in traffic right at the buzzer bounced off the rim as Everman held on for the victory.
As the top two teams in the Quad Cities standings after the regular season, Cleburne and Everman earned first-round byes in the single-elimination tournament.
Burleson defeated Joshua 37-22 to reach the semifinals, and Crowley downed Godley 53-40 to earn a matchup against Cleburne.
Kennedale edged Aledo and Granbury got past Alvarado in other first-round games.
In the Jackets’ first game of the day, Cleburne downed Crowley 60-39 to set up the meeting with Burleson.
Everman defeated Granbury 38-25 to earn a semifinal berth against Kennedale.
Everman edged Kennedale to reach the finals, 32-30, in the third game of the night decided by three points or less.
