The Metroplex-based band Silver Rail will keep Burleson’s Fourth of July festivities on track Friday night when the group performs at 5:30 p.m. at Hidden Creek Sports Complex.
The group will share the stage with the Mighty Marvelous Four and will deliver a mixture of classic rock, country blues and Motown, peppered with a few modern hits, said Bill Bateman, lead guitar.
The four-member band is composed of Bateman, bassist Bobby Combs, vocalist/rhythm guitarist Rey Gonzales and drummer Jessie Norcross, none of whom are strangers to Burleson. Silver Rail performed at events such as Honeyfest and the city’s Cinco de Mayo festival this year.
“The Burleson crowds are wonderful, and they always seem to get into our music,” Bateman said.
Gonzales, who also serves as Burleson’s assistant director of public works, said his group loves feeding off the energy of Burleson fans.
“I love it; they are so involved in the community, and we’ve always had some great energy here in Burleson,” he said. “We just love playing the music.”
Gonzales said that if he could summarize the band’s sound in a single word, it would be “Americana” because of the group’s eclectic mixture of old country, classic rock and modern tunes.
The band performs mostly covers, but the friends do plan to release a CD of original material sometime down the road, Bateman said. In the meantime, Silver Rail keeps busy by playing several gigs a month.
“We all have full-times jobs, so it’s not like we’re trying to make a career out of this,” he said.
The group formed in March 2006, Bateman said. He, Gonzales and Combs knew one another from the beginning, but they had a tough time finding a good drummer.
“We actually got the drummer through an ad in the Dallas BackPages,” he said. “The ad said ‘Musicians Wanted,’ and Jessie was the first one who answered, and he fit in perfectly. We’re all just laid-back.”
Bateman’s musical career began when he was a child, he said. He learned to play guitar at the age of 10.
