Information about launching Neighborhood Watch programs in Burleson will be presented from 12:15-4 p.m. May 24 thanks to the addition of a new position on the police force.
Community Resource Officer Mike Owen will pass out information about Neighborhood Watch programs during the come-and-go event at First National Bank’s Wilshire Room, located at 740 S.W. Wilshire Blvd.
“A Neighborhood Watch program is important because it prevents deterioration and promotes safety,” he said.
During the event, Owen will explain his new position as community resource officer, a role designed to tighten the bonds between the department and the community.
“It’s basically an attempt to improve the relationship with the community and cut down on crime,” he said.
Owen, who started with the police department in 2003, hopes to increase the number of Neighborhood Watch programs across the city, a goal he has been working on since assuming his position in late March, he said.
Those interested in beginning Neighborhood Watch programs on their streets are encouraged to attend Owen’s event. The officer will use the time to gather area residents’ contact information and share advice for launching successful safety programs.
“One tip for starting a Neighborhood Watch program would be to gain the support of over half the people on one block in a neighborhood,” he said.
To be considered an active Neighborhood Watch chapter, neighbors must hold at least two meetings a year and take attendance. Owen said he will attend the meetings at the request of the neighborhood.
