The Crowley High School boys track team won the Class 4A, Region I meet in San Angelo, and the Lady Eagles placed third overall and will be sending a large contingent to the state track meet Friday and Saturday in Austin.
Crowley will be competing in nine different events at the meet, seven boys events and two girls events.
One Crowley competitor, Ryan Green, set a new regional record in her event, winning the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches.
The old mark was 5 feet, 81/2 inches set in 2003 by LesSundra Ford of Fort Worth South Hills.
Crowley’s girls 800-meter relay team placed second at the regional meet with a time of 1:40.87 in the finals, 1.05 seconds faster than its preliminary time in San Angelo.
Crowley boys took home three regional championships, as Kent Onouha won the 100 run, Terrance Edwards won the 200 run, and the 400-meter relay team won that event.
Onouha ran .11 seconds slower in the final than he did in the preliminaries, recording a time of 10.77 seconds in the first heat before slowing to a 10.88 in the finals.
His time was still good enough to net a gold medal.
Edwards improved upon his 22.24-second time from the preliminaries, finishing the finals heat in 21.70 seconds to win the 200 run.
In the 400-meter relay, Crowley improved by .01 seconds, running a 41.87 to win the event after clocking a 41.88 in the preliminaries.
Crowley also claimed four silver medals at the regional meet.
Wesley Harold took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a final heat time of 14.68 seconds, one tenth of a second slower than his preliminary time.
Stan Smith shaved nearly a full second off of his time in the 400 run to earn second in San Angelo, finishing the final heat in 49.09 seconds after recording a time of 50.06 in the first heat.
Pat Briscoe’s triple jump distance of 46 feet, 3 inches was good enough for a silver medal, and the 800-meter relay team cut more than a full second off its preliminary time to earn second, finishing the final heat with a time of 1:27.85 to advance to state.
North Crowley will be represented in two events in Austin, as Mitch Hobson placed second in the boys long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 10 inches.
The girls 1600-meter relay team also earned second place, improving on their 3:48.26 preliminary time by more than a full second to 3:47.18.
