Candidacy applications available until March 10

Candidates wishing to run for one of two available slots on the Crowley City Council may file until March 10.
Places 5 and 6, held by Tina Pace, who is filling an unexpired term, and Beau Yarbrough, will be on the ballot for the election, which will be held May 10. Winners in the races will serve three-year terms.
The council approved the date at its meeting Thursday night.
Early voting for the election will begin April 28 and continue through May 6.
Applications for a position on the ballot may be obtained from the city secretary and filed in her office from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The night’s moment of levity came when Mayor Billy Davis said he often wonders what would happen if the council didn’t approve the election date.
In other actions the council:
• Denied a request from Stuff-it-Storage to install three signs on the walls of its facility on Farm-to-Market Road 1187. The submitted request did not show the signs to scale, and the planning and zoning commission had recommended against the signs. The business owner did not attend the meeting to make a case for the request.
• Approved requests from Chesapeake Operating Inc. to extend drilling permits at two sites for an additional 180 days. The company had changed its drilling schedule and would not begin drilling in the time allotted under the original permits. City Manager Truitt Gilbreath said in an interview before the meeting that the situation was not uncommon, and requests for extensions were usually granted.
• Adopted a resolution accepting the 34th-year funding for the federal Community Development Block Grant Program. The money from the grant will be used to replace a two-inch water line on North Texas Street with a six-inch line.
• Authorized the city to join the CitySmart Program offered by Oncor Electric Delivery. The program offers support to cities in reducing energy consumption as mandated by the state Legislature. Participating cities receive advice, workshops, technical assistance and financial incentives at no charge.
• Approved a settlement agreement between the Atmos Cities Steering Committee and Atmos Energy Corp. Atmos had asked for a $54 million rate increase. The settlement provides for a $10 million increase and changes the method for seeking new rate increases. The changes will be reflected in customer bills beginning March 1.
